Abstract

We examined the effect of a riparian feature on the density of a variety of raptors finding that the Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis), Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus), and Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus), all open county grassland specialists, were less abundant in grassland habitats that included a riparian feature. These same three species were also less abundant in grasslands that included utility poles. Taken together, these findings suggest an avoidance of areas with tall structures (tress or poles).
