Bank Swallows on the Sacramento River, a 10-year Update on Populations and Conservation Status

The species’ common and scientific names both describe the nesting habitat of these colonial swallows, which typically excavate nest burrows in tall vertical banks along rivers and other large water bodies. Their nesting colonies are transient as the swallows have evolved to exploit the dynamics of erodable cliffs and banks formed by storms and floods.
