First Record of a Northern Pintail × Northern Shoveler Hybrid in the Central Valley, California

Abstract

I report on a hybrid Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) x Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata) hybrid found in 2025 at the Colusa Wildlife Refuge in California’s Central Valley, an apparent first record for the valley. I describe characteristics of this uncommon hybrid pairing and possible reasons for its low incidence.
